I have been travelling.

Retirement is supposed to be:

60–70 is Go Go!

70–80 is Slooow Go.

80–90 in NO Go

Over 90 is Flower Grow (as in pushing up daisies).

I am in Go-go mode.

Travelling with brother Edward, the frustrated stock car racer, we carved our way south…

A Roman alley lined with familiar sycamores, a bike and time

Ambitious motorcycle rides can be done casually or with vigor. I like vigor. An old livestock thief’s way of saying “Go big or go home”. A few of my favorite unapologetic authors would approve; Jim Harrison, Earnst Hemingway, Charles Bukowski, Wallace Stegner, Stephen Bodio, Rick Bass, Thomas McGuane and Guy…

Cooking ducks

I was triggered by an Englishman who painfully described his mother boiling a five-inch thick, bone-in ribeye steak in lightly salted water for some hours to cook it. When he says that now, 40 years later he still mourns that piece of meat, I can relate.

Unlike the fall of 2021 the year 2020 gave us a damp fall and farmers were standing out in their late season grain fields anxiously testing crop moisture and ground conditions; ranchers were moving herds of butter-fat cattle off pastures still lush…

Determining the age of wildlife

People sometimes want to know how old wild animals are and since we can’t really ask them — well, we can ask them, they just rarely answer- we have to resort to detective-like methods. You know the approach, like sneaking a peak at your date’s…

The power of music

What a joy when realization pours down like rain. In 1997 I was new to Edmonton, Alberta. New job, new kids, new country, but music provided a consistent tread of shared language, friendship and connection. …

A trip to Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan is not to be taken lightly. One traverses a five-hour downhill economic gradient of from oil-rich Alberta to the rural decrepitude of Saskatchewan’s dirt farmers scraping out a living where the soil switches from rich to weak brown woodland soils. The route was punctuated…
